#005 - Bathroom Odors

Odors in restrooms have many sources. Microscopic Bacteria from urine if left unchecked will multiply and grow to levels that will cause health threatening odors and disease. An EPA registered disinfectant cleaner is the only way to control bacteria growth and the odors associated with them.

However even the best maintained restrooms may have odor problems. One area to look at is the floor drain. These drains are designed to remove moisture and waste from the restroom. They work best when kept moist. If you suspect this as your problem odor source area, pour water directly into the drain until you see a water level. Once you get the desired water level it is good to pour a couple tablespoons of cooking oil into the drain. The cooking oil will float to the top of the water level and create a barrier against evaporation, prolonging the time for the drain to dry out.

Another way to combat odors in the restroom floor drains is to use an liquid or powder enzyme which is designed to search out the food source (bad bacteria) and eat it. Spartan Chemical has a full line of enzyme products to help in this area.
